EDITING THE WINDOWS REGISTRY
Most changes to Windows are done through the various control panels, but sometimes the
only way to make a change is to edit the registry directly. Before making changes to the registry, you should make a backup of it. An exercise at the end of the chapter illustrates this procedure. Depending on the Windows operating system being used, one or two registry editors are available. They are called REGEDIT and REGEDT32. Both registry editors can be used to change the registry; however, there are some differences between the two. The big difference is how information is displayed. With REGEDIT, the five major subtrees are in one window. With REGEDT32, the subtrees are in individual windows. In Windows XP, even though both commands are available, they both display the same.
