BASIC WINDOWS USAGE OVERVIEW
When Windows-based operating system first boots, there may be a logon screen. With
Windows 95 and 98, this logon screen can be bypassed by pressing the Cancel button. However, with Windows NT, 2000 Professional, and XP, the logon screen cannot be bypassed; a userid and password must be entered. A userid and password is created when the operating system is loaded and possibly other userids and passwords created.Windows XP is different in that it boots to a welcome screen instead of the logon screen. Note thatWindows XP’s welcome screen does not contain the localAdministrator account (the master account that is allowed to change everything on the local machine) user icon on the welcome screen. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and login with the Administrator account userid and password. Once in the Windows environment, the desktop appears. The desktop is the area on the screen where all work is performed. The desktop is part of a GUI (Graphical User Interface) environment. It is the interface between the computer user and computer files, applications, the operating system, and installed hardware. The desktop contains icons. Icons are pictures on the desktop that provide access to various devices, files, and applications on the computer. The desktop can be customized so that the most commonly accessed applications or files are easily accessible. WIN Figure #1 shows the major components of the desktop.
